Do you got a 2024 Yamaha YZ250F and used to own a 2023 Yamaha YZ250F? Do you miss a little bit of that 23’ low end punch out of your 24’ YZ250F? If so, there is hope and that hope lies with Jamie at Twisted Development and their Air Boot Kit. Let’s break down the new 2024 Yamaha YZ250F’s engine character in a short paragraph.
The 24’ YZ250F engine has less low end pulling power with a little more mid range and top end stretch than the 23’ version. Jamie at Twisted Development believes that this mainly lies with the air intake system. The 24’ YZ250F has 30% more capacity and a lower position than the 23’ YZ250F which we believe is why the 2024 YZ250F doesn’t feel as exciting or has that torque feel out of corners. Jamie at Twisted Development said he could make his airbox kit even better than the 2023 so he adapts a 23/24 YZ450F airbox into the YZ250F. The YZ450F has more velocity and less capacity than the YZ250F airbox which changes the power character. To aid in the new airbox adaptation, Jamie maps a Vortex ECU with pump fuel to help with length of power. Now that you got the jist of the kit and what we did, how did it run on the track?
Let’s be honest, I’ve ridden enough YZ250F’s with just a Vortex to understand that it can make a noticeable difference compared to the stock ECU. Although the Yamaha Power Tuner App/stock ECU is one of the widest working parameter built ECU’s, it is still not as good as a Vortex. What I haven’t had much experience with is volume and capacity within an airbox along with a Vortex ECU. The results were quite mind blowing out on the track. Not only did I get that pick up/recovery that I wanted out of the low end, the YZ climbed through the power quicker with more torque feel. The whole engine felt freer to me as well as had added meat if I wanted to run third gear through corners (AKA, the Vet rider’s G spot gear). I could not even think about running third gear with the stock set up on the 24’ YZ250F. With the TD airbox kit this gave me the freedom to run second in corners and leave it on longer or short shift earlier out of the corners to pull third. In other words it gave me more bottom end as well as a longer pulling power through pivotal gear like 2nd, 3rd, 4th gear. It almost feels like it has a dual injector but with slightly less throttle response. The pulling power and torque feel almost mimic the second injector feel, but the airbox kit doesn’t quite have that on/off feel through corners like that lightning quick 2nd injector RPM response feeling. It is also noted that we ran PUMP FUEL! WE DID NOT RUN RACE GAS! This mod works on pump fuel with a race gas feel! Impressive and fun to ride a 250F at almost 180 pounds!
